Letting Go

Welcome to an exhibition about death and memory in a material world.

Image may contain: Font, Text, Organism.

Letting Go reflects on death and loss. It depicts a two-fold process where the living will have to let go of the dead, and the dead will have to let go of life among the living. The installation traces the increasing distance between the bereaved and the deceased.

Letting Go is a spatial translation of the research outcomes of Death, Materiality and the Origin of Time, a research project that has studied how people establish relationships with death in different cultures during different ages. In this exhibition we have recontextualised Objects, which have been given away to Fretex. Things that were once important in someone's life.

Exhibition designer Alexandra Schüssler is a trained anthropologist, working as a curator at the Schule für Gestaltung, School of Design, in Basel.

In collaboration with Peter Bjerregaard, Schüssler has been responsible for a number of experimental design projects associated with Death, Materiality and the Origin of Time since 2011.
