Kuniteru worked in the Utagawa School under Toyokuni and Kunisada. This print portrays a geisha next to a lantern – a traditional motif in ukiyo-e. Even so, his themes were often like bridges extending from the old culture to the new emerging industrialization of the Meiji Period (1968–1912).
