This print shows a woman with a wad of paper in her mouth. The paper alludes to the post-coitus situation: a need for the couple to wipe themselves. Contemporary lovers of ukiyo-e allegory would easily grasp these signs in the picture. They would also know that the woman might need to stuff her mouth with paper in order to avoid moaning during the act.
Eizan was the son of a painter and fan maker of the Kanô School. He appropriated Utamaro’s style of feminine beauty, yet with less explicit portrayal of body figure. The title mentions a rumor, but what is it? We can only guess: either the image says something about a fresh rumor or gossip.
