Ogata Gekkô’s artistic practice coincided with the Meiji Era (1868-1912). His tool as a woodblock printer is the chisel, but the lines he makes with it evoke fine brushwork. He did not gain this expertise through apprenticeship, but worked his way to recognition by illustrating books and newspapers.
A recurring theme in his oeuvre is birds. His approach shows a new type of realism. “The Manners and Customs of Ladies” does not draw on the past. Settings are contemporary and, as the illustrations show, female virtue is a matter of etiquette.
