Not much is known about Hishikawa Ryûkoku. He was active in the early 1800s and his style reveals the influence of Utamaro.
His subject for this print is the 16-year old greengrocer's daughter who, in 1683, was burnt to death as punishment for arson. She committed the crime because of love and her story is well known. It is found in many versions including novels and stage plays.
