Mirror Kingdoms – Poland and Norway in the Middle Ages

Illustration of a picture card in a deck with the mirroring image of a king.

Poland and Norway were remarkably similar in the Middle Ages, with their first kings and Christianization around the year 1000, but war and upheaval led the kingdoms in remarkably different ways.

Mini exhibition

Temporarily closed, opens 20 June 2024

The rulers of Poland lost their royal title, and the land was fragmented into many small dukedoms. Norway remained a kingdom but was beset by intense internal strife.

Now researchers from the Universities of Warsaw and Oslo have taken a closer look at both similarities and differences between two kingdoms on the edge of medieval Europe.

Together with the research team in the project ELITES, the Historical Museum opens a small exhibition that, through animations, pictures and texts, tells the story of two distant neighbours who have more to talk about than meets the eye.

Please note that the exhibition will be temporarily closed from April to June due to construction work in the adjoining space.
