South America

Language and knowledge about the exploitation of local resources are samples of living traditions. South America has always been a region with great linguistic, social and cultural diversity. Today South America consists of 12 countries and in this exhibition indigenous groups from among other places Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela are represented.

The art of living builds on knowledge of the local environment and good use of local resources. Much of the knowledge has been gathered and passed on from generation to generation throughout the centuries.

In South America indigenous organize and found organizations to secure their rights and cultural sur- vival. Many international organizations, such as Cultural Survival and the Rainforest Foundation, support indigenous peoples by documenting their situation and operating collaborative projections. The Rainforest Foundation supports indigenous struggles for land rights, protection of the environment and special educa- tion.
