Tourist or pilegrim
In souvenir shops in Lourdes, it is easy to see how today’s pilgrims can be part of the tourist industry. But pilgrims in the Middle Ages also trailed after theirguides and bought mass-produced pilgrim badges.
Historical sources tell us that pilgrims of the past, like pilgrims today, were also motivated by curiosity and a spirit of adventure.
Some of today’s tourist trips can have a deeper significance for those who pack their bags. A visit to the birthplace of a famous musician, a war memorial or the stadium of a favourite team can help create unity in people’s lives.
Many travellers have been described as half tourists – half pilgrims.
