Jagath Weerasinghe was a Lecturer at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies of the University of Kelaniya for a number of years in the 1990s. Through his teaching and by introducing new methods and concepts of art making in a number of exhibitions during that period, he became influential for a whole generation of younger artists to follow. He has exhibited extensively in Sri Lanka and internationally and is also actively engaged in art writing. He is also a founder member of Theertha International Artists’ Collective.
His diverse interests led him to also drift his attention to other related fields such as conservation of mural paintings. Presently a Professor of Archaeology at the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya, his interventions in heritage management have been widely recognized. He lives and works in Sri Lanka.
In his work Jagath Weerasinghe explores the possibilities of producing art that is reflective of broad political and social implications within a deeply personal context. His interventions in the Sri Lankan art scene since the 1990s have pursuaded many younger artists to likewise take a socially critical and socially engaged approach to art.
