Anoli Perera lives and works in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Her art practice of over fifteen years includes painting, sculpture, installation, and object art, which she has exhibited widely in Sri Lanka as well as internationally. She is presently involved in art administration at the Theertha International Artists’ Collective, of which she is one of the founder members and General Secretary. In addition, she also engages in writing on art and exhibition curating.
Anoli Perera’s work revolves around issues of women, consumer culture, and cultural eroticization, probing into the “uncomfortable positioning of women in society” with a feminist criticality. She investigates women’s multiple roles as homemakers and comfort providers, as objects of sexual desire, and as consumers faced with commoditized beauty ideals propagated by the media and billboard advertisements.
Her installations also reveal a special treatment of “material” and “making,” where “the material itself becomes part of the narrative of the work and the process of making becomes part of the overall meaning.”
