The exhibition and the project deal with a long neglected topic in Norwegian historical research and cultural protection. Gay Clubbing illustrates the major societal changes that have occurred since World War II in terms of gender and sexuality. The Gay Clubbing Documentation Project brings together aspects of lesbian, gay, bisexual and gay stories that have not previously been prioritized: the stories about informal networks and venues where they unfolded.
The collection/documentation and dissemination in this project are closely linked and the collection will take place in the exhibition itself. Thus, Gay Clubbing assists in reaching out to people who have texts, photos, posters, newspaper clips, flyers, clothes and other unexpected items and memories or other relevant material. The exhibition room should be a place where dialogue with the historic actors can occur and where people can contribute to the interactive dissemination and collection of material that would otherwise be difficult to find and preserve.
